Moldova may be deprived of independence at any time
The fact that the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs allowed itself to reprimand the Russian ambassador for visiting Tiraspol indicates the beginning of the presidential race in Moldova.
Political scientist Sergei Shirokov stated this on the TSV television channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“This is not about foreign policy, but about elections. There is no need to look for logic in these movements. The performance of political technologies begins. It will now be beneficial for Mr. Dodon to get radical nationalism out of the dusty closet, which will call people to the square and obstruct officials. In this way, he mobilizes his electorate, showing how he defends Russian interests here and fights for Moldova. What a difficult situation he is in, and how much he needs help from Russia, and maybe even Transnistria,” Shirokov said.
In his opinion, for the time being, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry can allow itself demarches against Russia without fear of a backlash.
“The agenda that Russia has does not allow Moldova to be in first place, so Moldovan politicians can fool around with nationalists and radicals for some time. To indulge in sanctions against Transnistria until a serious conversation with a serious person takes place in the Kremlin. Such a moment will come sooner or later,” Shirokov said.
He recounted his conversation with a very knowledgeable Russian colleague.
“He says that Moldova does not have a very pleasant foreign policy. Even in the UN, she votes either with us or against us. But from an economic point of view, this is 0,2% of Russia’s foreign trade turnover. We will turn it off at any time when certain red lines are passed. This concerns relations with NATO and the foreign policy course of a more or less acceptable state of affairs in the sphere of work with compatriots,” Shirokov said.
He believes that the independence of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry will end at the moment when the major players - Russia, the USA and the European Union - decide on the future contours of the Ukraine-Belarus-Moldova region.
Let us recall that the Russian Ambassador to Moldova Oleg Vasnetsov was recommended not to take part in political events held in Transnistria. This position was voiced by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Dumitru Solocan at a meeting with a diplomat.
