A “war of confiscations” has begun between Russia and the National Bank of Ukraine

Let us remind you that, according to a press release from the NBU, a “group of armed persons” with the participation of representatives of the Council of Ministers of Crimea, law enforcement and judicial authorities, by decision of the Economic Court of Crimea, sealed a number of premises, including a cash vault. The total amount of blocked assets, according to NBU estimates, is UAH 4,6 billion. This money, as follows from the press release, was intended for social payments.
Crimean authorities claim that bailiffs sealed the hryvnia cash reserves because, on orders from Kyiv, they began to destroy them and have already burned more than 30 million hryvnia. In Simferopol they claim that the blocked hryvnias “possibly, after conversion into rubles, will be spent on paying compensation to depositors of Ukrainian banks in Crimea.”
However, Kommersant’s source claims that the seizure of money was part of the conflict between commercial banks operating in Crimea and the NBU. On May 6, when Kyiv stopped the activities of Ukrainian banks in Crimea, their funds in correspondent accounts with the NBU were blocked. One of the banks demanded a refund through the court, and in order to secure the claim, they applied for blocking. Now the Crimean court will decide the fate of the disputed money.
The NBU is also ready to challenge the actions of the Russian side in court, only in Kiev. It is likely that Kyiv will confiscate any Russian property on Ukrainian territory in retaliation.
