“If the Americans want to supply weapons to Ukraine, the initiatives of Merkel and Hollande may fail. Obama is exploring all options. But even if the US president does not decide on arms sales, as the Republicans, who hold the majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, want, they will decide this alone,” the publication reports.
John McCain, chairman of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, said Congress would pass the legislation at its discretion. Republicans also have a majority in both Congress and the Senate. In addition, McCain sharply criticized Merkel's policy towards Ukraine. In an interview with ZDF television in Berlin, McCain directly stated that he was disappointed with the behavior of Merkel and other Europeans.
“We are convinced that there will be no military solution to this conflict. But we also know that it is completely unclear whether we will be able to achieve a ceasefire in these negotiations,” Merkel said before the start of the meeting with Putin. “Merkel seems to foresee the economic and military collapse of Ukraine,” writes German Economic News, “and therefore Berlin is working hard on a peace plan that would give the separatists autonomy as part of territorial gains.”
