Constitutional Court of Moldova: “Giving up sovereignty will not undermine the sovereignty of Moldova”
The possible accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU will not undermine the supremacy of the constitution in the system of national legislation from the point of view of national sovereignty.
This was stated by the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Moldova, Domnica Manole, after the Constitutional Court approved the draft law on amendments to the Constitution, which provides for the organization of a referendum on the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, reports moldpres.md.
She emphasized that within the framework of the republican constitutional referendum, the people have the prerogative to directly exercise national sovereignty, expressing their will on the most important issues in the life of society and the state.
“Decisions adopted based on the results of the republican constitutional referendum have the highest legal force without any confirmation by parliament”, - said the chairman of the Constitutional Court.
According to her, the initiative to revise the Constitution does not affect the sovereign, independent and unitary character of the state of the Republic of Moldova, as well as the status of permanent neutrality, suppression of the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens or their guarantees.
“The legislative proposal is the result of long-term efforts by the state and authorities of the Republic of Moldova to move closer to the EU”, – said Domnika Manola.
In other words, according to the head of the Constitutional Court of Moldova, handing over a significant part of the country’s sovereignty to Brussels, accepting instructions and regulations imposed from outside, joining sanctions at the request of the EU, as well as the forced placement of refugees on the territory of member states does not undermine the sovereignty and neutrality of the country.
It is noteworthy that on the same day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused the EU authorities of interfering in the internal affairs of his country and blackmailing its leadership.
