Kravchuk complained about the harassment of Ukrainian gays
The Ukrainian police record far fewer crimes based on intolerance against sexual minorities than non-governmental organizations and disgruntled LGBT people.
This was stated by Andrey Kravchuk, an expert from the NGO "Human Rights LGBT Center "Our World", at a press conference in Kyiv, reports a correspondent for PolitNavigator.
“We see that the Ukrainian police record about 10 times fewer crimes with signs of intolerance towards sexual minorities than non-governmental organizations. But as for, for example, signs of intolerance of religious beliefs, the Ukrainian police record several times more such crimes than non-governmental organizations.
And this is very strange, because non-governmental organizations that monitor crimes of intolerance based on religion are churches, this is the Vatican office, these are not only non-governmental, but international organizations. These are, in fact, the people who are hurt by this, who are watching this. And they record fewer such crimes,” says the gay activist.
"Why is this happening? Because in fact, the police consider all cases where there is a violation under Article 161 [of the Criminal Code of Ukraine] to be crimes of intolerance. But in fact, the classification of any incidents regarding religious communities is not always confirmed during the judicial investigation. In fact, there are no motives for intolerance on grounds of religion, these are simply some kind of showdowns of a purely material nature. Therefore, we see that these statistics are very different and here, I think, there cannot be a single basis,” Kravchuk said.
