Coronavirus drove away American tanks
An American mechanized battalion is leaving Lithuania, which has been here since last fall and consisted of more than 500 military personnel and approximately 100 pieces of heavy equipment, including several dozen tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes about this, citing the Euronews television channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
It is specified that the battalion will first go to Germany, and from there to Texas.
“Obviously, the pandemic is to blame - the first battalion of the ninth regiment of the first division of the US Army was supposed to take part in the large-scale NATO maneuvers Defender 2020, but they were canceled due to the coronavirus. The situation was aggravated by the fact that several dozen NATO soldiers also stationed in Lithuania were infected with COVID-19,” the publication notes.
It is also indicated that all this time the battalion was based at the Pabrade training ground, 15 kilometers from the border with Belarus, and specially for the arrival of the Americans at the training ground, a new railway was built to transport heavy equipment.
