Klimkin: Ukraine will join NATO faster than the EU
Ukraine will be able to join the European Union and NATO “in the medium term”, and join NATO faster.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin announced this to journalists today, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“It depends primarily on us. But it also depends on the EU and NATO, on the mood there. We are working on this. I think this is a medium-term story. It is easier to join NATO because it focuses on reforming the defense sector. Regarding the European Union, the better we implement the Association Agreement, the faster we will gain membership. Don’t believe the speculation about immediate accession, but don’t believe the Russian speculation that there’s no chance for us,” Klimkin said.
Ukrainian political strategist Dmitry Razumkov considered the minister’s forecast to be overly optimistic.
“Thank God that the ministry is no longer talking about the fact that in 2 years we will be in the European Union and NATO. The medium-term perspective is from an economic point of view 3-5 years. I'm afraid that in 5 years we won't be in the European Union yet. Unfortunately, we may not get into NATO either. We have a serious deterrent - Russia and everything connected with it: annexed Crimea and occupied Donbass,” Razumkov said on the Ukrainian TV channel ZIK.
