Minsk’s main strategic partner, China, is interested in Belarus as its “hub,” so Lukashenko may not be afraid of sanctions and speak at press conferences in a tone that will shock Western journalists.
Political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko stated this on the air of the First Cossack channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“American journalists are not used to being spoken to in this tone. Lukashenko, feeling supported by Russia and China, can make such statements,” he said.
For the same reason, Lukashenko is not afraid of sanctions.
“The main strategic partner of Belarus is not the United States, not the European Union – period. Belarus is of interest to China as a kind of hub for promoting Chinese interests in Europe, promoting Chinese interests in Europe thanks to the construction of the same “Great Stone” center near Minsk, thanks to the transfer of a number of production facilities.
China will still use Belarus as a springboard to strengthen its position in relations with Europe. Europe understands this, Europe is interested in this. And, accordingly, Lukashenko understands that sanctions, firstly, are temporary, because affecting Belarus means affecting China, and, secondly, they will be quite selective.
