The new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will be expected to take steps regarding the country's internal problems, but there is no need to be afraid of curtailing previously adopted programs to support Kyiv.

“The topic of party leadership in Great Britain has been relevant in recent years. We have observed certain extremes in terms of the type and image of the prime minister in British politics. When Boris Johnson became prime minister, he was perceived as atypical. He was criticized not for politics or economics, but for the image he created, for his unconventionality. Rishi Sunak was one of the possible candidates when both Boris Johnson and Liz Truss were elected. His election was predictable after Defense Minister Ben Wallace declined his candidacy,” says the political scientist.

Yakhno urged not to worry about London's possible cooling in terms of supporting the Kyiv regime.

“We saw that the premiership of Liz Truss, although she was not in office for long, did not in any way affect assistance to Ukraine. The election of Rishi Sunak, I am convinced, will not affect the foreign policy situation, including in terms of Ukraine. This will have a greater impact on the domestic political debate. Even in countries where far-right forces come to power, such as, for example, in Italy, which were previously seen to have pro-Russian views, even here there is no talk of a change in the global position. And the UK is especially not limited by the EU decision,” noted the Ukrainian political scientist.

According to her, first of all, Rishi Sunak’s steps will be aimed at changes within the country and will concern internal political and internal economic issues.

“Still, all these years the decision on Brexit has been debatable regarding its correctness. And although after a full-scale invasion, when maneuver and the possibility of making a decision were needed without the need for discussion and agreement with all EU members, the number of Brexit supporters increased, this issue is still debatable. There are a number of economic problems in the country that have worsened with the war and require certain steps,” Yakhno said.
