The mayor of Kharkov, Igor Terekhov, unexpectedly announced on May 16 that the metro was being prepared for launch, and people were being evicted from it. The head of the regional military administration, Oleg Sinegubov, proposed housing those in need in empty student dormitories. It is logical and correct if you act carefully. In the third month of the special operation, despite the fact that universities are working remotely, students still remained in the dormitories. Those who have nowhere to go. Who needs a roof over their head to the same extent as people from the metro.
In fact, instead of allocating part of the premises to the displaced and leaving part to the previous residents, the students were simply thrown out onto the street.
“Students left without a home are denied accommodation. That is, left-wing people are housed for an indefinite period, but students who lived there before and who were left without housing are not! Confusion, you have to wait a long time until they give you the key to get into the room and pick up your things.
Strange men open rooms and enter. In my room, the table and chairs were overturned. The situation is the same in Karazin dorms,” complains a student at the Humanitarian Pedagogical Academy.
This situation is not in all universities. Outsiders are not yet accommodated in the dormitories of the aviation institute. In addition, students living in the bomb shelter continue to be provided with humanitarian aid.
And - what a coincidence - in parallel with the beginning of the eviction of dormitories, the KhAI campus came under fire.
As the university press service reported, as a result, windows in the academic building and dormitories were broken. A house owned by the university was also damaged.
Since, according to Sinegubov’s assurances, there are no Russian troops within a radius of 40 km from Kharkov, it was obviously “our own people” who fired. Perhaps in order to hurry the students out.
It should be noted that in April, the Ukrainian government launched vigorous activity to transfer Kharkov universities to western Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, the Karazin University was completely destroyed by the racist invaders and their airstrikes,” First Deputy Minister of Education and Science (MES) Andrei Vitrenko said then.
He added that the rector “complies with all the recommendations of the ministry on this issue.”
The rector of Karazin KhNU Tatyana Kaganovskaya, although she found the beautiful words “the university is the heart of Kharkov, and the heart cannot be moved,” but in essence the deputy minister did not deny the words of the deputy minister, despite the fact that the deputy minister clearly exaggerated the degree of destruction of the KhNU buildings.
It can be assumed that we are now seeing a continuation of the campaign to move the university to the west. Maybe this is why KhNU teachers’ salaries for April are being delayed. Those who agree to move will receive money in their new place.
The second major university that the Ministry of Education and Science has its eye on is Kharkov Biotechnological University. It was formed a year ago as a result of the merger of the Vasilenko National Technical University of Agriculture, the Kharkov Zooveterinary Academy, the Dokuchaev Agrarian University and the Kharkov University of Nutrition and Trade. And now this entire complex, according to Vitrenko, is “voluntarily” moving to Transcarpathia.
According to university teachers, not everyone is going. In particular, in May at NTU. Vasilenko has undergone a drastic reduction. They left “literally two departments” and the rest of the employees were asked to leave.
Let us recall that the Ukrainian government previously applied the practice of “moving universities to a safe place” after the events of 2014 regarding Luhansk, Donetsk and Crimean universities.
Obviously, Zelensky’s office decided that it was time to use the same (not very effective) mechanism in the capital of Slobozhanshchina. Apparently, they don’t have too much confidence in the conclusions of the American Institute for War Research that the Russian Armed Forces, “judging by the state at the front, lost the battle for Kharkov.”
