How Lukashenko looked for ways to reach Biden
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko sought the support of liberal political strategist Vitaly Shklyarov, who holds an American passport and was recently released from a pretrial detention center in Minsk , in order to establish contacts with the new US administration.
Political scientist Stanislav Belkovsky expressed this version on the air of the radio station "Echo of Moscow", reports a correspondent of "PolitNavigator".
“I think that Alexander Grigorievich’s conversation with Vitaly was not just consultations with a political strategist and a PR man, but it was also an exchange of views on the topic of how to make Washington not treat the Belarusian leader too harshly, to give him the opportunity still sit quietly and peacefully and, perhaps, leave power, but not immediately and not quickly,” Belkovsky said.
He recalled that Shklyarov’s wife works at the US Embassy in Kyiv, and the political strategist himself was involved in the campaign of Democrat Bernard Sanders during the 2016 elections.
“In general, perhaps his connections can help in some way here. Taking into account, of course, the fact that Mike Pompeo himself worked for him, and Mike Pompeo won’t bother for anyone,” Belkovsky said.
Shklyarov was released from the pre-trial detention center, where he spent several months, in October after the famous meeting of Alexander Lukashenko with political prisoners.
This week Shklyarov told Ekho Moskvy about his communication with the Belarusian leader, whom the former prisoner described exclusively positively.
The criminal case against Shklyarov, who is accused of having connections with opposition blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky, who is in jail, has not yet been closed.
