Coal imports are putting Ukrainian mines to death - expert
Ukraine is facing negative trends in the coal market - from a country that sells coal, it has turned into an importer, which threatens the closure of state-owned mines.
Energy market expert Dmitry Marunich announced this on the UkrLife internet channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the expert, Ukraine already imports large amounts of coal today.
“We export practically nothing, so we import, unfortunately, we import a lot of coal. This is already a problem... I’ll tell you frankly - imported coal, yes, it can become cheaper than coal mined here.
Last year we recorded very negative trends in coal. Unfortunately, our largest private mining company, DTEK, has reduced production. Our mines have significantly reduced coal production this year, and these are very bad, negative signals.
We will need imports more and more if we maintain approximately the same amount of electricity in the energy system produced by thermal power plants - this is a very negative signal,” Marunich said.
