Due to its desire to join the European Union and sever ties with Russia, Ukraine lost a number of economic sectors and production, and its external trade balance fell by almost half over five years.
Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara stated this on the NASH TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the diplomat, Ukraine has lost hundreds of thousands of jobs in recent years.
“We have been on course as a candidate country for EU membership all these years. In practice we see what happened. We started changing standards, for example, in trade to EU standards, and foreign trade collapsed. If we compare with the 13th year, when the volume of Ukraine’s foreign trade reached 160 billion dollars, then based on the results of last year it would be good if we closed by 100 billion... Those industries that were promising have turned into unpromising ones. Where Ukraine created tens and hundreds of thousands of jobs, we have lost it all. First of all, the chemical industry,” Kozhara said.
Earlier, Kozhara stated that Ukraine had traded the production of aircraft and missiles for the export of sunflower oil, but would not become a member of the EU, no matter how much it wanted to.
