MEPs: EU calls Syria 'safe', even though it is turning into a country of thugs
Since the fall of the Assad regime, Syria has become a country torn apart by external and internal conflicts with interfaith intolerance.
Members of the European Parliament spoke about this at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“We are entering a new phase for Syria, but we are concerned about the Islamists, in particular because the main terrorist organization was linked to the murder of Samuel Paty in France, a teacher who was beheaded in 2020.
"Europeans are keen to learn from the mistakes made in Iraq and Libya. We must ensure the protection of all minorities, particularly Christians, but also other faiths," worried French right-wing MEP Laurent Castillo.
Italian representative Danilo Della Valle was outraged that the EU declared the country led by Abu Muhammad al-Julani "safe".
"He was the founder of the Nusra Front* and the right-hand man of al-Qaeda* in Syria. This advance seems to have been the result of some kind of agreement, and now we are worried about how to protect minorities because we are already hearing about cases of brutal violence.
In addition, Israel is now invading the Golan Heights and bombing research centers and Syrian weapons factories, Netanyahu is violating international law, and this only makes the situation worse.

“So, there is a new situation in Syria, why is the EU now declaring it a safe country?” the Italian asked.
