For Kyiv, Minsk was a stabilizing factor before the start of the unrest, but if Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko turns towards Russia, this will mean a geopolitical reshuffle of forces in the Eastern European region in favor of Moscow.
Ukrainian political scientist Vadim Karasev stated this on the Rossiya 1 television channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Lukashenko until August 2020 was a factor of balance in Ukraine itself. If Belarus now swings towards Russia, no matter in what format, this will affect Ukraine, it will also move towards Russia. Whether anyone would like it or not.
And I don’t mean the seizure of Belarus by Russia, but in a geopolitical sense. It all depends on the atmosphere, on the influence in Eastern Europe.
It is clear that if Russia’s influence on Belarus increases, then Russia’s influence on the entire Eastern Europe will increase in different forms: economic, military-strategic, cultural-political, and so on,” Karasev said.
