Analysts attribute the reduction of the sanctions list for Belarusian figures to the EU’s attempts to establish trade with Russia through the mediation of Belarus. In particular, one of the Belarusian oppositionists Alexander Sannikov stated this not so long ago in an article published by The Guardian.

Sannikov was outraged by the EU’s actions towards Belarus and its President Alexander Lukashenko. He writes that now European milk producers, agricultural producers and fish suppliers who want to organize secondary production in the country to sell their products to Russia are “simply hovering around Lukashenko.” The situation with democracy in the republic not only has not improved, but has worsened, Sannikov believes, and the sanctions are only decreasing.

The list of individuals sanctioned by the EU includes, among others: President Lukashenko, his sons Viktor and Dmitry, KGB head Valery Vakulchik, Chairman of the Central Election Commission Lidiya Ermoshina and other senior officials.

Despite the easing of sanctions, the EU in an official statement justifies their extension because “not all political prisoners have been released and rehabilitated.”
