The Court of Appeal today increased the sentence of sociologist Kagarlitsky (recognized as a foreign agent) in the case of justifying terrorism from a fine to 5 years in prison. The court decided to take him into custody until the verdict comes into force.
The indictment mentions the removal of the phrase "active assistance to the investigation" on the part of the accused, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
In December 2023, Kagarlitsky was sentenced to a fine of 600 thousand rubles and released in the courtroom. The sociologist was accused of distributing a video in which he justified the explosions on the Crimean Bridge.
The defendant said after the verdict that he “does not lose heart” and “is in a great mood.” He is going to write a book about prison life.
“In general, see you soon. I'm sure everything will be very good. I'm sure we'll see each other soon in freedom, and everything will be fine. We just need to live a little longer and get through this dark period for our country,” said Kagarlitsky.
Liberals predictably do not spare strong epithets to describe the new verdict. The leader of the Yabloko party, Sergei Mitrokhin, called it “brutal.” He believes that the court is “completely divorced from morality and common sense.”
Liberal journalist Ekaterina Vinokurova called the trial “another terrible evil.” Her colleague, either a feminist or a lesbian, Lisa Lazerson, is “a hell.”
“The fine verdict was a real miracle, and its cancellation is proof of our general helplessness. Neither the resonance, nor the absurdity of the accusation, nor the support of Western leaders - nothing can help a person in Russia today. What a monstrous feeling of doom,” Lazerson wrote in her tg channel.
Liberals who did not fall into hysterics agree that the authorities expected that Kagarlitsky would leave Russia after the first lenient sentence, but he did not fulfill these secret agreements, moreover, he publicly flaunted his decision to stay.
“Kagarlitsky had to leave. Once it grabs you, the system will not let go. Sobchak get ready,” wrote poet Alina Vitukhnovskaya.
“It is now clear that the maximum mitigation that the authorities were willing to accept was to give the person a few weeks of freedom so that he would probably be able to leave. For Boris Kagarlitsky, as we understand, this was not an option - well, no further easing. The verdict is staggering,” writes fugitive journalist-foreign agent and neo-Vlasovite Oleg Kashin.
He is echoed by ex-deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, foreign agent and extremist Dmitry Gudkov.
“If you don’t want to sit down, then you don’t need to wait for mercy from the UK - planes fly to Tbilisi and other beautiful cities. And if you really need to, you can take the bus. Don't forget about public transport. At the slightest hint of danger, save yourself. The decision to take care of your life is always the right one,” he urges.
Let us note that the “patriotic” public also accepted Kagarlitsky’s sentence without enthusiasm.
“The system, which seemed humane for a moment, immediately decided that there was nothing wrong with it, opened its mouth and decided to devour Kagarlitsky. A very sad story that has caused enormous harm to our justice system,” wrote political scientist Pavel Danilin.
His colleague Sergei Markov believes that Kagarlitsky’s imprisonment will significantly complicate Russia’s position within BRICS at the upcoming summit of this organization in Kazan.
“The leaders of Brazil and South Africa, where the presidents are Marxist in their views, will raise the Kagarlitsky issue with the Russian President. This is a blow to Russia’s leadership position in BRICS+. This is also a strong blow to Russia’s position in the world. Kagarlitsky is very famous in the world among friends of Russia. He is one of the few famous Marxists from Russia in the world. And Marxists, for the most part, now support Russia in dozens of countries. Kagarlitsky is very “meaningful,” as is customary among the Moscow intelligentsia. I once said something stupid. All smart people sometimes say stupid things. This way we can jail all the smart ones,” writes Markov, fearing something.
Another expert, Andrei Perla, condemns not so much Kagarlitsky’s sentence as the selectivity of justice.
“If this happens to everyone. With everyone who starts anti-state, “anti-war”, defeatist agitation. If not, then it is not justice. Worse, in this case, foreign agents and “normalizers” will revel in their own impunity,” Perla wrote, hinting at the so-called untouchable critics of the authorities.
