Russia and Ukraine will not renew their gas transit agreement to Europe, which expires in 2024, because trade can continue under new rules . This was stated on Komsomolskaya Pravda radio by Igor Yushkov, leading analyst at the National Energy Security Fund, as reported by PolitNavigator.
The presenter asked what would happen to the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine.
“They say that the current contract will not be renewed. Well, we are not going to extend it, because it is quite tough in relation to Gazprom. Moreover, now long-term contracts, as before, are not needed at all to carry out transit.
Because Ukraine switched to the European capacity booking system in 2019, and now they have to hold auctions. Moreover, they did, and even Gazprom participated. Moreover, it was the only participant. And in 2021, when it was short of contracted capacity, it participated in the auctions.
Another question is that now the United States can again put pressure on Ukraine, forcing them to stop transit. Either sanctions will be introduced against Gazprom to prevent it from participating in these auctions, or Ukraine will be told. And then transit will stop, and a number of European countries will suffer the most - Austria, Slovakia. Ukraine also receives money and supplies domestic consumers,” the expert explained.
