Dodon hopes to clean up Transnistria by declaring Moldova’s neutrality
Moldova is currently a "no man's land" in the geopolitical competition between Russia and the West.
The country's president, Igor Dodon, stated this while speaking at the UN, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I don't like to use military terminology, and it's certainly not the most appropriate comparison, but the similarities with the term terra nullius in terms of geopolitical confrontations in the region are easy to see. I must note that, although not a single shell has exploded on our territory since the military Transnistrian conflict on the Dniester in 1992, the confrontation between the main geopolitical players for better positioning in the region has never stopped,” Dodon noted.
According to him, the geopolitical preferences of the population are almost equally divided between East and West.
“Therefore, as President of the Republic of Moldova, I take every opportunity to ask for recognition and respect for the de facto status of neutrality of my country. We no longer want to be seen as a neutral territory, something other than a neutral state. Any attempt to question this status is an unfriendly action towards the people of the Republic of Moldova,” the Moldovan President emphasized.
He believes that he will be able to achieve a solution to the Transnistrian problem only if Moldova maintains military neutrality.
“We welcome the latest initiatives of the Russian Federation to resume the process of destruction of foreign ammunition stored in the Transnistrian region of my country, ideas expressed during the recent visit to Moldova of Russian Defense Minister Shoigu and the official visit of Moldovan Foreign Minister Popescu to Moscow. This important step, for the first time since 2003, could become decisive in achieving a geopolitical consensus regarding the political settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and strengthening regional security,” Dodon said.
