“Civilized Ukrainians must recognize the right of Crimeans to self-determination”
Ukraine’s secession from the USSR was recognized by Russia and the entire world community, and therefore, in accordance with the UN Convention on Human Rights, recognition of Crimea as Russian is also legal.
The president of the State of Law Foundation, Evgeniy Tarlo, stated this on air on the Russia-1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Firstly, of course, we recognize everything, and we are parties to the convention, I don’t know how Ukraine is doing, whether it has joined or not, on human rights. So, the human right is to choose. The right to participate in a referendum is his right. And Russia defended this right of the Crimeans. Crimeans are a rather isolated group of people, the overwhelming majority of whom are Russian. Russians, like any other people, have the right to self-determination and to decide their own destiny.
If Ukrainians once de facto, due to prevailing circumstances, separated from Russia, separated from the single state in which we lived for many centuries. We recognized this right, although we liked her or didn’t like her, but that’s how our leaders decided, and we agreed with it then. Therefore, I think that Ukrainians who want to show themselves as civilized must recognize the right of Crimeans to their independent expression of will. This is their right,” the expert said.
“The overwhelming majority of Crimeans spoke unequivocally at the referendum. And they confirmed this right many times by participating in national and local free elections. You can go there and make sure that Crimeans live freely and happily,” Tarlo concluded.
