If Ukraine now takes its own economic countermeasures in response to Russia’s imposition of new sanctions, Kyiv will deal a blow to its own economy.
This opinion was expressed on the NewsOne TV channel by Kiev human rights activist Vladimir Chemeris, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Our leadership introduced political sanctions, which, in fact, do not affect anything, just like the sanctions that Russia imposed. But economic sanctions are very serious, and we cannot introduce such sanctions because the economic relations between Ukraine and Russia are very different from the economic relations between the European Union and Russia,” he noted.
“Over the past 5 years, our exports to Russia have fallen from 20 to 4 billion. And imports from Russia increased, which further skewed the imbalance, which was detrimental to the Ukrainian economy and influenced the fall in GDP.
The most important imports from Russia are nuclear fuel, which we cannot do without, and coal, which, thanks to our ultra-rightists who, with the support of parliament, blocked the Donbass, we now also buy from Russia at a higher price.
A catastrophe has already happened here. And a drop of another half a billion, as economists predict, is simply a deepening of the catastrophe that already exists,” summed up Chemeris.
