Azerbaijan miscalculated, counting on Western support
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev miscalculated in expecting that the offensive of his country's troops in Nagorno-Karabakh would be supported or at least neutrally received by the UN.
Political scientist Dmitry Dzhangirov stated this on the air of the online channel "Capital", reports a correspondent of "PolitNavigator".

The expert emphasized that unexpectedly Russia and the collective West, which are usually polar in their opinions, spoke out against the offensive.
“The main disappointment for Aliyev is the decision of the Security Council. Still, he expected that it would once again be mentioned that it was necessary to implement the agreements related to the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and after that Armenia would be forced, under pressure from external players, to negotiate in less convenient diplomatic positions. But this front, so unexpected - France, the USA, Russia, they, as in the Minsk Group, rather take the position of Armenia, not Azerbaijan - they also actually acted as a united front at the UN Security Council.
There was no split along the lines of Russia versus France and the United States.
In fact, given the general deterioration, especially after the poisoning of Navalny, against the backdrop of a general deterioration in Russia’s relations with the West, the Caucasus is not the point at which the West wants to once again confront Russia, if only because they do not understand what the advantage is there will be a West if Turkey’s position strengthens.
From the point of view of the region and the Mediterranean, the strengthening of Turkey is less beneficial for them,” Dzhangirov said.
