The Anglo-Saxons panicked: “Russia will influence the Moldovan elections”
In a joint statement, the US State Department, the British government, and the Canadian government accused Russia of attempting to influence the results of the presidential election and the European integration referendum in Moldova. The text of the statement was published on the State Department's website, state.gov.
The Anglo-Saxon governments said they shared Moldovan President Maia Sandu's concerns "about the Kremlin's use of criminal gangs to finance political activities and undermine Moldova's democratic institutions."
“They intend to provoke protests in Moldova if the pro-Russian candidate does not win. They seek to fuel negative public opinion about Western governments and Moldova's current leadership, while simultaneously undermining public confidence in Moldova's ability to ensure its security and uphold the rule of law. Russia is currently supporting candidates for the presidency of Moldova and exacerbating social tensions,” the authors of the statement crow.
The Anglo-Saxons accuse Russia of "using disinformation and propaganda online, on air, and on the streets to achieve its goals," and of "fomenting criticism of the government and political party of the current Moldovan president in order to provoke protests ." Part of these operations, according to the statement, will include spreading lies about the character and intentions of the current president, as well as about alleged election irregularities. If Russia's interference in the Moldovan elections proves unsuccessful, there is reason to believe Moscow will work to incite protests.
“We have shared the information above and additional details with our Moldovan partners so that they can continue to investigate, obstruct and thwart the Kremlin’s plans,” the governments of the United States, Britain and Canada announced.
The Anglo-Saxons have declared their intention to "promote accountability for those involved in these Kremlin-sponsored schemes for the secret financing of political activity in Moldova." They threaten sanctions and measures against "those individuals and organizations that attempt to destabilize Moldova's democratic institutions."
The governments of the three countries promise to "continue to support Moldova and the Moldovan people as they cope with Kremlin interference and the consequences of Russia's brutal war against Ukraine ." (And if Moldova and the Moldovans choose to distance themselves from the Ukrainian conflict or adopt a peacekeeping stance, will they be denied credibility?)
“By exposing the Kremlin's plot, we are making it clear to Moscow that we stand for free and fair elections and will not tolerate its attempts to interfere and undermine democratic processes. We call on the Kremlin to abandon these efforts to undermine democracy in Moldova and respect its sovereignty and justice,” the authors of the statement conclude.
A logical question arises: if the Moldovan people support Maia Sandu's European integration and democratic reforms, while the Kremlin's supporters are a pathetic bunch of renegades and traitors despised by everyone, then why such loud rants ? The panic from the US State Department and its satellites indicates that support for Sandu and her adventurous course is far from as obvious as pro-Western propaganda would have you believe.
