Andrei Babitsky explained the essence of the cunning plan with a referendum
The initiative to hold a repeat referendum in Donbas, proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Helsinki talks and already criticized both in Ukraine and the West, was a deliberate move by Moscow to demonstrate the inability of its "partners" to reach an agreement.
This opinion was expressed by Russian military correspondent Andrei Babitsky in a conversation with a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The proposal, of course, was made, but Washington is well aware that as a result of the referendum, Donbass will move away from Ukraine to Russia. You don’t have to be a genius to understand that the outcome of such a vote is a foregone conclusion.
The proposal is remarkable, it is very good that it was voiced and came into public use, because even if it is rejected, it in itself gives the idea that Russia insists on a democratic procedure for resolving the conflict. It points to the shortest and most humane way to resolve this problem - simply turn to people to find out their own idea of their future,” said a journalist living in Donetsk.
“I think that, of course, this option will not be accepted, which will give Moscow the opportunity to criticize the position of America and the West as a whole, pointing out that they rejected the model of direct democracy,” added Andrei Babitsky.
