American filmmakers were not allowed to make a film about the achievements of Russian cosmonautics
A famous American director wanted to make a film about space on the Russian Soyuz and show its unique capabilities, but for political reasons he was unable to do this.
The head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, stated this in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“At the beginning of 2020, American film director Doug Liman approached us. He directed many famous Hollywood films, including Mr. and Mrs. Smith. This director works very interestingly with many US cinema stars. Including Tom Cruise. They asked to come and get acquainted with our capabilities in ensuring the filming of a film directly in outer space. We received their group in January last year and showed them the assembly shops of the Energia rocket and space corporation,” recalls Rogozin.
According to him, American filmmakers were absolutely delighted with what they saw.
“They said that they want to fly our Russian Soyuz, to show its unique capabilities, how engineers bring it to perfection even in conditions where several modernizations have been carried out. We wanted to show the Americans the possibilities of filming at the legendary Cosmonaut Training Center - TsPK im. Gagarin, and much more,” added the head of Roscosmos.
“We agreed with the proposals of American filmmakers to start shooting this film. However, in March we learned that certain political forces had banned American filmmakers from making this unique project. They were told who they should go to and who they should rent from. And whose ship should be filmed? Despite the fact that it will all be more expensive, worse, and more risky. After this story, I realized that space is big politics,” Rogozin concluded.
