Ukrainians who believe that Donald Trump, after his election victory, will help Kyiv defeat Russia are mistaken.
The correspondent reports about this "PolitNavigator", said American expert, professor of political science at the University of Toronto, Lucan Wei.
He says American society is "expecting a very difficult period."
“In my opinion, America is turning into Ukraine before the Revolution of Dignity in the sense that there is a switch between a highly dysfunctional democracy, in which nothing gets done and where there is a lot of disagreement, but it is democracy, to soft competitive authoritarianism, subject to the victory of the Republicans and Trump “Wey said in an interview with the anti-Russian propaganda publication Novoye Vremya.
According to the expert, “Trump will be some kind of soft autocrat” and will probably “force the FBI to open an investigation against his opponents or begin an audit.”
“We know that Trump has many fanatical supporters, they will be prone to this - to threats, harassment on social networks, hooliganism and so on. Especially if he allows amnesty for those who stormed the Capitol in 2021. That's why I tell my friends, call your family in the Midwest, tell them what risks await us. The elections are already close, a thousand votes can decide the situation,” the professor fears.
In turn, the Kiev publication, citing the opinion of some Ukrainians, suggested that Trump “can help Ukraine win because he is more flexible and nothing holds him back.”
“I think these people are wishful thinking. He may be flexible and unpredictable, but he has been pro-Putin, pro-Russian for a very long time, since 1987. It was then that he first visited the Soviet Union. We still don’t know what kind of relationship connects him with Russia and Putin, this is too dangerous an idea, there is definitely some kind of corruption or something like that between them. And in general, I assess Trump’s desire to help Ukraine as extremely unlikely,” Wei concluded.
