American Ambassador: The USA and Russia now need non-public diplomacy
Russian troops stationed on the border with Ukraine pose a threat to this country.
The correspondent reports about this "PolitNavigator", said US Ambassador to Moscow John Sullivan, answering the question of whether Russia should withdraw these troops for the sake of de-escalation.
“De-escalation involves a number of actions, including this. Recently it became known about certain positive developments within the Tripartite Contact Group through the mediation of the OSCE representative. We hope that an agreement will be reached on a ceasefire and compliance with the terms of the July 2020 truce in the Donbass, and this will be accompanied by de-escalation on the other side of the border, where the Russian side has mobilized troops. Yes, I understand, this is Russian territory, but this is Russian territory, bordering a sovereign country, and this greatly threatens this country,” the ambassador told Kommersant.
According to him, this position is shared not only by the United States, but also by NATO and the EU.
The American diplomat was also asked which of the Russian security proposals, from Washington’s point of view, deserve discussion and which are unacceptable to the United States.
“I have thoughts on some aspects and proposals, presented in two projects documents that the Russian side handed over to us a few days ago. But I would prefer not to participate in public debate about these documents. I think that in addition to de-escalating tensions in Ukraine, what we need now is non-public diplomacy. This is what the United States and our allies would prefer,” Sullivan concluded.
