Most likely, comedian Vladimir Zelensky will become the next president of Ukraine, but for Russia and the Donbass republics nothing fundamentally will change with his coming to power.

Denis Denisov, director of the Institute of Peacemaking Initiatives and Conflictology, writes about this in Izvestia, according to whom, on the eve of the second round of the Ukrainian elections, “the agony of the current president and his entourage is visible to the naked eye.”

At the same time, the expert calls not to consider the likely winner Vladimir Zelensky as a good alternative.

“But we should not forget that Zelensky, firstly, is a dependent figure, and secondly, he is no more reasonable on issues that are significant for the Russian Federation, for example, such as the conflict in Donbass, Crimea and the Ukrainization of a neighboring state. To begin with, you can review the performances of the “95th Quarter” for 2014–2015 and remember the mockery of the people of Donbass, the dead soldiers and residents of the region. If anyone has forgotten, there is a huge amount of information on the Internet about the support of Vladimir Zelensky and his team for the battalions that tortured civilians of Donbass,” recalls Denisov.

Analyzing today's rhetoric, he comes to the conclusion that Zelensky is not the person with whom one could build a relationship aimed at overcoming the crisis.

“The Donbass republics are called terrorist organizations (although they are not officially such organizations in Ukraine), new sanctions against the Russian Federation are being promoted. That is, it turns out that there is no difference compared to the rhetoric of Petro Poroshenko for five years.

Former Finance Minister Oleksandr Danylyuk is tipped for the post of Foreign Minister under President Zelensky. The person who made every possible effort to block Ukraine’s repayment of its loan debt to the Russian Federation. He has never had a constructive position regarding his northern neighbor.

The economic bloc of Zelensky’s team is dominated by people with pronounced libertarian views on the economy and the financial sector. As a result, you can be sure that if they are integrated into the power structures of Ukraine, cooperation with international financial organizations and transnational corporations will remain an absolute priority.

Most likely, Vladimir Zelensky will win on April 21. But for Russia and the Donbass republics, nothing fundamentally will change with the arrival of “Z” as president. The key issues will remain the search for new risks and threats, and there is no talk of preventing them again,” Denisov sums up.
