“We are talking about the most serious crisis between Russia and the West since Putin came to power. Russia now risks once again finding itself completely isolated politically and economically, much more seriously than after the (USSR) invasion of Afghanistan (in 1979),” says Alexey Malashenko, an expert at the Carnegie Center in Moscow.

“All scenarios provide for an escalation of the conflict. Putin's main goal is to show that Russia is not abandoning its position. The result is a crisis with extremely dangerous consequences,” says political scientist Maria Lipman.
