This opinion was expressed in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta by the famous French political scientist, ex-member of the European Parliament Ivan Blot.
“We see that the stock of legitimacy of the current Kyiv authorities has noticeably decreased over the past time,” the political scientist emphasizes. “They have weakened significantly; demonstrations are constantly taking place near government buildings. As for radical nationalists, they don’t want to hear about the Minsk agreements at all. This is a serious problem for President Petro Poroshenko. If he moves towards implementing agreements and granting rights to the regions of Donbass, then it is possible that extremists will try to settle scores with him. Apparently, he knows about this, and therefore slows down the process.”
At the same time, the publication’s interlocutor believes that France and Germany need to take a tougher position towards Ukraine.
“I think the western part of the Normandy format, the leaders of France and Germany, should put pressure on Kyiv so that it stops blocking the implementation of the agreements,” sums up Ivan Blo. “Maybe they should, as an incentive, offer additional economic and financial assistance, which Ukraine really needs. True, I must note that both Hollande and Merkel now have many other concerns. So it’s hard for me to imagine that they will take an active position on this issue.”
