The negative attitude of the population of the Donbass territories controlled by Kyiv towards the authorities due to obvious social problems was further aggravated by the ban on holding elections in 18 UTCs of the region.
The director of the Institute for Strategic Studies “New Ukraine” Svyatoslav Denisenko stated this during a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Indeed, the population’s sharply negative assessments of the government’s activities regarding the situation in the country are noteworthy, and our hypothesis is based on the fact that these assessments were very negatively, very seriously influenced by the decision to ban and postpone elections to local self-government bodies in 18 separate territorial communities in Donbass.
It is obvious that the authorities failed to convey to the people the message that these elections are being canceled, postponed for security reasons, both by and large, and for the electoral orientation of the population, and these negative assessments of the work of the authorities, both local and central, are a consequence of the fact that people did not accept these arguments. This is an insult, this is a very protest moment,” Denisenko worries.
According to him, the decline in trust in government has objective and subjective explanations.
“Objective explanations are the consequences of the coronavirus crisis and the fact that for six months now we have not been able to get out of the socio-economic crisis and the medical crisis, to some extent.
The second point is that the truce in the East is very fragile, and there is always a risk that it may break down, and this greatly affects the assessment of the activities of the authorities and the assessment of the situation in the country by the residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, of course. Well, both the government’s ratings and assessments of the government’s performance are also directly influenced by conflicts and scandals that constantly occur in government,” the expert added.
