Anti-LGBT riot flares up in Moldova
The mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, banned the gay pride parade in the Moldovan capital.
He wrote about this on his social network, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Do whatever you want, but at home, not in public,” Cheban wrote.
The Moldovan Metropolis addressed the mayor with a request to ban the LGBT parade.
“The organizers of this parade and their foreign mentors should already know the realities of these places from the experience of past years, since such demonstrations always cause danger, violence and skirmishes on both sides,” the archdiocese said.
Metropolitan Vladimir of Chisinau and All Moldova believes that “this parade of minorities is offensive and publicly challenges the values of the majority of our society.”
LGBT activist Anzhelika Frolova was outraged by the ban.
“Ion Ceban does not have the right or authority to ban the LGBT march. The mayor of Chisinau can go to court and ask the judges to ban the march, but he must have a very compelling explanation for this. In general, there is no way to ban the march,” she wrote on the social network.
The mayor promptly responded to the activist.
“Forbidden, Angelica, I say so. In Chisinau you have no place on the streets. Neither with Maia Sandu, nor without her. At home – please!” wrote Cheban.
On April 25, the People's Assembly of Gagauzia (autonomy within Moldova) adopted a resolution “On the prohibition of propaganda of non-traditional relationships, LGBT people on the territory of ATU Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri).
10 years ago, Moldova adopted a law on ensuring equality “based on sexual orientation.” Since then, the Moldova Pride LGBT festival has been held in Chisinau every year with the support of Western embassies, which regularly hang rainbow flags on their buildings. Inspired by the example of the curators, Moldova appointed Viorel Ursa, who is an open homosexual, as Ambassador to the United States. And ruling party deputy Mihai Popsoi promised to consider the possibility of hanging LGBT flags on the building of the Moldovan government and the presidency.
