“The annexation of Crimea must be settled retroactively in accordance with international law so that everyone can come to terms with this fact,” he said in an interview with the Passauer Neue Presse newspaper. Deutsche Welle yesterday presented these statements by the German politician as one of the main news of the day.
Platzeck sees several options for official recognition of Crimea, including a repeat referendum supervised by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). However, the politician emphasized that this issue should be discussed between Moscow and Kyiv. The politician also believes that the eastern regions of Ukraine are unlikely to return to Kyiv's control, NG writes.
“What will happen after Putin if the Russian president leaves? He will certainly not have a pro-European successor, but rather an even more nationalist one,” Platzeck warned, speaking about the need for dialogue with Russia.
