EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Günther Oettinger stated this in an interview with the German publication Bild .

“This issue should most likely be discussed after Erdogan,” Oettinger said. According to him, in the current conditions, the Turkish authorities can count on joining the EU no earlier than the next decade.

However, the European Commissioner added that Turkey continues to be an important partner from a geostrategic and economic point of view.

Let us recall that it was previously reported that the line of conduct of the head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, on the issue of negotiations with Ankara on Turkey’s membership in the EU was criticized by Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern.

Let us recall that the Turkish leadership used the suppression of the failed military rebellion as a reason to launch mass repressions against dissidents. More than 2800 judges and prosecutors, thousands of military officers and university rectors were fired, and dozens of newspapers and educational institutions were closed.

Let us also recall that Türkiye has long and unsuccessfully sought the right to join the EU.
