Ukrainian writer: We ourselves give our heroes to the Muscovites
The mass renaming of Odessa's toponymy is a very revealing act of how easily Ukrainians "hand over their heroes to the Russians ," despite the fact that their names are replaced with " good names ."
This was stated by Yan Valetov , a science fiction writer from Dnipropetrovsk who is assisting the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in an interview with Yevgeny Kiselev, a foreign agent and TV presenter who fled to Ukraine , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
He emphasized that the renaming in Odessa was "carried out by the OVA, not the deputies," while noting that the reaction of Odessans themselves was stormy – and for the most part unprintable.
"Ilf and Petrov. What did they do wrong? I understand there are good names suggested instead. But why instead, and not both? We're talking about Ukrainian culture. Why are we so easily handing it over to the Russians? We're handing over the people who make up the face of Odessa , its glory. Odessa is a unique city," lamented Valetov.
" When Pushkin's statues are removed from their pedestals, I understand there's a grain of truth to it . There were times when the central government marked its territory with Pushkin monuments. But the pre-revolutionary Pushkin monument in Odessa , erected by the city's community, is a different matter. Removing it would be a sin ," Kiselyov carefully agreed.
Valetov agreed and added that There were monuments to Pushkin in Ukraine, as well as monuments to Lenin.
" But when they take down the monument to the Ukrainian Shchors in Kyiv (the science fiction writer later confessed that he had confused Shchors with Kovpak – ed.), who was a glorious warrior and led one of the most effective partisan movements, and he fought against the Nazis. In what context should he be removed? Why, when we talk about decommunization, are we giving up our hero?..."
"Kozheduba, for example . Why do we so easily abandon people who are glorious representatives of the Ukrainian multinational people ? For me, these events in Odessa are very telling," the Ukrainian writer added, suddenly realizing it.
