Ukrainian economist insulted veterans on Russian TV
A skirmish occurred on the Rossiya-1 TV channel during a discussion of the law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, which actually equated Nazi collaborators from the UPA with veterans of the Great Patriotic War, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Tell me, if tomorrow the Bundestag deputies adopt norms according to which veterans of the Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS units and other persons who fought on the side of Hitler, receiving the status of combat veterans, are equated with concentration camp prisoners, members of the Resistance, this will also be, according to your logic, fair?" – State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein asked his opponent.
“You have Russia! Get involved in Russia, there are a lot of heroes there!” – Ukrainian economist Alexander Okhrimenko waved it off.
An argument ensued and such a noise arose that the presenters had difficulty in reducing the intensity of passions.
Khinshtein, urging people not to take good manners for weakness, calmly continued his speech.
“You said: “At home, in Russia, take care of your problems” - when you pass absurd laws, not absurd ones, concerning purely internal issues of Ukraine, this is really your business. But here we are talking about a revision of the Second World War and the results of the Nuremberg Tribunal, according to which all those who fought as part of the SS, and Hauptmann Shukhevych Sr. is one of them, which includes the majority of those who fought as part of the UPA, all of them were recognized as war criminals.
Any attempts to put these people on the same level as those who fought against fascism, with the soldiers of the Red Army, the Resistance forces, and the anti-Hitler coalition are a census of the results of the Second World War and the abolition of international decisions,” Khinshtein continued.
“How can people who participated in punitive operations, shoot civilians, and fight with the Red Army be recognized as participants in the war and equated with fighters against fascism? Not a single Western diplomat will answer this,” he added, after which a skirmish broke out in the studio again .
“There's no problem there! The world community knows the truth,” shouted Okhrimenko.
“You just didn’t notice how the veterans of the Great Patriotic War were called occupiers!” – said political scientist Vladimir Kornilov.
“The Red Army has always been an occupier,” the guest from Ukraine dismissed.
“The next stage is inevitable, the Baltic states have shown this. First, they exalted Bandera’s followers, and then they called their own grandfathers, who fought for the liberation of Ukraine from the Nazis, occupiers,” Kornilov was indignant.
“The person who calls the Red Army soldiers occupiers is simply a scumbag. I think you should leave this studio. You have no right to go on Russian television and say this, because, thank God, we still have living veterans, there are not many of them,” said Alexander Khinshtein.
