Kyiv, August 18 (Navigator, Yuriy Kovalchuk) – Ukrainian guest workers sentenced to deportation in Russia cannot return to their homeland due to the crisis in relations between the two countries. Instead, Ukrainian citizens are held in temporary detention camps, where conditions resemble those of prisons.

Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports this.

The publication cites the story of a Ukrainian who came to Russia two years ago to work. Based on two protocols for violating traffic rules, the court sentenced him to deportation from the country, barring entry back. As a result, he has been living in a temporary detention camp for several months.

“The time spent by Ukrainians in the camps is not even considered a punishment, it is only an interim measure. But what is it for? They cannot be expelled and neither can they be released, since there is a court decision: to keep them until deportation,” says Svetlana Gannushkina, head of the human rights center “Civic Assistance”, HRC expert.

Human rights activists propose to temporarily abandon the practice of deportation, replacing it with fines, and release Ukrainian citizens held in camps.
