Ukraine paid Russia £1,16 million as part of compensation for legal costs in the lawsuit over “Yanukovych’s debt” - $3 billion, which Kiev refused to return after the Euromaidan victory, citing the fact that, allegedly, it was not a loan, but a bribe to the previous to the Ukrainian leadership for abandoning the course towards integration with the EU.

The court ordered Ukraine to pay Russia the face value of the bonds in the amount of $3 billion, as well as various penalty interest. In addition, Kyiv had to compensate Moscow for legal costs in the amount of 2,8 million pounds. The debtor had to pay 50% of this amount no later than September 20, 2017, which Ukraine eventually did.

In June, Kyiv filed an appeal against the decision on “Yanukovych’s debt.” Hearings in the Court of Appeal are scheduled for January 2018.
