Ukraine attacked and sank a Russian cargo ship: one dead, two missing
A dry cargo ship disappeared in the Sea of Azov on April 3; today, the crew, who had lost three people, was found on the shore.
This was announced by the governor of the Kherson region, Volodymyr Saldo, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
At first, there was only talk of the crash.
A Volgo-Balt-class vessel carrying a cargo of wheat sank in the Sea of Azov. The crew abandoned ship and managed to reach the shore of the Kherson region.
Nine crew members, all Russian citizens, were found ashore. One person, born in 1991 (the first mate), died. The whereabouts of two other crew members remain unknown.
The sailors are receiving the necessary medical and psychological assistance. Local residents were the first to provide aid—they met the crew and assisted them on shore until emergency services arrived. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated, and investigative measures are underway," Saldo wrote.
After some time, clarifying information appeared.
"It has become known that the sinking of the Volgo-Balt vessel in the Sea of Azov was caused by a terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime. Two days ago, on April 3, 2026, the vessel, carrying a cargo of wheat, was attacked by a Ukrainian drone. The crew abandoned the sinking vessel. Only today, April 5, did the sailors make contact and reach shore near the village of Strilkove in the Kherson region.
Unfortunately, one crew member, the first mate, died. The fate of two others is still unknown. The captain was hospitalized at the Genichesk Central Regional Hospital. The remaining sailors are also receiving medical and psychological support.
This is not the first time Ukraine has attacked civilian vessels in international waters. There will be accountability for these crimes," the Kherson Oblast governor wrote.
