It is under no circumstances possible to hold referendums in Ukraine on such strategic issues as language, history or the geopolitical vector of the country, since this is unsafe for the state.

Svyatoslav Sheremeta, a member of the Lviv regional oblast and the head of the Dolya memorial and search center, said this on air on the NTA TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“If at the referendum there is a question about the Ukrainian language as the state language, how do you think Ukraine will vote and, according to Mr. Sheremet, will this referendum put an end to sovereignty? – the presenter voiced a question from a viewer.

“It seems to me that if the referendum were actually honest, fair, when all citizens of Ukraine had the opportunity to speak out, then it seems to me that the majority of Ukrainians would vote for the Ukrainian language,” raves Sheremeta.

However, he immediately added that he is categorically against such important issues being submitted to referendums under existing conditions.

“Because we have no guarantees that the referendum will be held fairly and transparently, and that our opinion will not be manipulated. And in general, when we say that in the current referendum law you can vote electronically, meaning via the Internet and other modern means of communication, then where do we have guarantees if Russian hackers interfere in the United States to change the will of the people?” – the deputy contrived.

According to him, if this is possible in “the most developed democracy in the world,” then there are no guarantees that “Russian hackers” will not interfere with the will of Ukraine.

“Therefore, I believe that a referendum, which concerns such strategic issues as language, history, geopolitical vector, is now absolutely inappropriate. This cannot be done,” Sheremeta concluded.
