Gerashchenko has jitters because of Russian hackers
Russian hackers can hack the server of the Central Election Commission of Ukraine and “increase” percentages in support of a particular candidate.
Verkhovna Rada deputy, member of the board of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Anton Gerashchenko stated this in an interview with Apostrophe.
According to the politician, this could serve as a reason for forceful action.
“It is obvious that the Central Election Commission and its servers will defend themselves; money has now been allocated for this in order to counteract an attempt to disrupt the elections through a cyber threat. So that you understand the reality of Russia’s influence on us through the cyber threat, recently in an interview one of the leaders of the National Police said that during the Champions League final in Kiev in May last year there was an attempt through a cyber threat to disrupt the power supply to the Central Republican Stadium at the moment when there was a match there Champions League contenders, which was watched by a billion people.
Imagine, TV channels all over the world are showing the Champions League final and at this time the stadium in the center of Kyiv is being cut down. But the Ukrainian energy system withstood this attack and this did not happen. During the elections, I am sure that tasks will be set to disrupt the work of the Central Election Commission server or, for example, to introduce errors into its work. For example, when one of the candidates on the screen, which will be broadcast by hundreds of TV channels, may be assigned some percentage that he does not have.
It is clear that later the error will be discovered, but this may cause a scandal, confrontation in society, and a reason for some kind of forceful action. By the way, if my memory serves me right, in 14, during the presidential elections, a huge percentage suddenly jumped out on the screen for candidate Dmitry Yarosh. Then it turned out that this was an error, and some other problem, but in this case it could lead to some chain of probable events. Therefore, cybersecurity is a top priority and the protection of elections will be the subject of the National Police,” Gerashchenko said.
