If, after the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban launch an attack on the Central Asian republics, they will not be able to provide successful resistance.

Military expert Alexei Valyuzhenich told Moskovsky Komsomolets this, as reported by PolitNavigator correspondent , while assessing the future developments in the country following the soon-to-be-completed withdrawal of American troops.

He says the Taliban's success was a foregone conclusion from the moment the US Army began withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.

“The government and army of Afghanistan created by the Americans, as expected, showed that they are incapable of resistance and, in general, functioning without constant outside support,” Valyuzhenich said.

According to him, for now, a Taliban victory does not pose any direct threat to the Central Asian republics.

“But there is a very serious indirect threat. There is a powerful Islamist movement in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and other post-Soviet republics. Militants from these countries went to fight in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. To be honest, the commander of the Dushanbe riot police once fled to the Islamic State along with a group of officers. Surely the terrorists have their own people in the security forces of these countries, their own secret cells. And now they can raise their heads. And only then, to the aid of brothers in faith and ideology, the Taliban may rise,” warns the publication’s interlocutor.

He is skeptical about the Central Asian republics' chances of repelling the Taliban's offensive.

“In the ranks of the Taliban there are many who have been fighting without a break for 20-30 years. They have enormous experience. They often harassed the US Army, excuse me. So they have experience, they have motivation. Until recently there was a shortage of weapons. But, thanks to the Pentagon, they now have weapons. So now we will see such an “IS 2.0” of the 2014-2015 model,” the expert noted.

“In general, in my opinion, the situation can only be resolved through the joint efforts of a broad coalition, which must include Russia, China, India, Iran, the countries of Central Asia and, perhaps, Turkey, which is already ready to intervene in the conflict. Otherwise, the situation will continue to get out of control due to the “domino effect,” Valyuzhenich concluded.
