Brzezinski's son proposes a warning strike against Russia
This is an extremely dangerous situation for Ukraine, given the Russian troops stationed on its border, and therefore the Euro-Atlantic community must take decisive action.
This was stated by the PolitNavigator correspondent during an online discussion on the Open Ukraine internet channel by the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense from 2001 to 2005, Jan Brzezinski, the son of one of the leading ideologists of American foreign policy in the past, Zbigniew Brzezinski.
“There is a very dangerous crisis. Putin has assembled a huge army near the borders of Ukraine. The international community needs to move from rhetoric to practical action. Russia has an offensive force of more than 100 thousand - tanks, troops, artillery, missiles, ships and other forces that provide the ability to strike quickly,” Brzezinski said.
He recalled Russia's lightning campaign in Crimea in 2014 and does not rule out something similar today.
“Both the security and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and, in fact, trust in the transatlantic community may be undermined. We need a comprehensive approach and response to contain Russia and prepare for sanctions if there is aggression. A powerful package of sanctions against Russia is needed,” the ex-official believes.
He proposes to specify potential sanctions, in particular, to cut off the Russian Federation from international payment systems, to make it impossible to export energy resources and obtain loans.
“We can even now take certain economic measures. Let's say, delay certain payments for gas and oil. Or cut off Russia for a few days in terms of a warning strike from SWIFT. We must also consider military steps that will show the seriousness of the West's intentions to strengthen economic sanctions. It is necessary to redeploy additional forces and assets to Romania and Poland and provide Ukraine with lethal defensive weapons,” Brzezinski added.
