“The fate of the rats”: Experts explained what awaits the remnants of the Nazis in the Azovstal catacombs
The militants holed up in the Azovstal basements are followers of collaborators and Nazis, and should be treated accordingly. Therefore, the Russian president's decision to abandon the assault on the catacombs and blockade them, sparing the lives of Russian and DPR armed forces personnel, is timely and correct.

Thus, the editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine, reserve colonel Igor Korotchenko notes that the militants will not be able to stay in the catacombs indefinitely - sooner or later they will run out of food and water, so the question of voluntary surrender is not far off.
"That's the right decision. Why sacrifice the lives of military personnel. It is necessary to establish control over the perimeter - sooner or later they will come out on their own, when they have completely run out of food and water. Time will force them to decide to give up.
We do not need to react in any way to the cries or statements of Kyiv propaganda. These are nothing more than air fluctuations that do not affect the decisions made by the Russian authorities. The main thing when conducting a special military operation is to minimize risks and losses among your own military personnel. The decision of the President of Russia, I believe, in this situation is absolutely correct and timely,” Korotchenko said.
A similar opinion is shared by Lieutenant General of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation Leonid Reshetnikov, who compared the militants sitting in the catacombs with rats:
“Why are we going to fight with them in the catacombs. They are huddled there like rats - let them sit. Everything needs to be blocked, surrounded, and let them think - surrender or die there, in the catacombs. Why arrange a battle in basements and catacombs - this is an unprofitable situation. Our assault troops will conduct very difficult combat operations, so this decision is very correct - we need to take care of the soldiers and commanders. Let them sit in the catacombs like rats, and as soon as they come out, artillery should fire at them.”
As for the comparison of neo-Nazis in the basements of Azovstal with the heroes of the Adzhimushkai quarries during the Great Patriotic War, which was made by Verkhovna Rada deputy, member of the Servant of the People faction Maxim Buzhansky, it is also inappropriate, says Crimean political scientist Sergei Kiselev.
“In Ukraine they love to invent myths with the help of which they glorify their “defenders.” But, for some reason, they often find historical analogies for these myths in the glorious Russian and Soviet history. There’s no need to look for these analogies there—yours, Bandera’s, is enough.
One can imagine the Azovstal basements not as the Adzhimushkai catacombs, but as simply a large Bandera cache, where this bastard hid from well-deserved punishment throughout the post-war period. This is a cache, not the Adzhimushkai quarries, and this is a Bandera cache. That’s all,” Kiselev said.
