Adler Turkmenov, a pro-Turkish member of the Nogai District Council in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic and a member of the "A Just Russia – For Truth" party, expressed outrage at the appearance of a banner depicting Russian military leader Alexander Suvorov on the streets of Cherkessk and sought its removal. According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, Turkmenov accused Suvorov of exterminating the Nogai people who inhabited the region and stated that the banner depicting him "outrages the public."
“I saw that here, in the city of Cherkessk, they hung a poster for Suvorov. This angered me very much. I came to see that this poster actually hangs. I am appealing to those people who came up with the idea in Cherkessk, in Karachay-Cherkessia, where the Nogai people are the subject-forming people - this is about the same thing if they now erected a monument to Stalin here, who deported the Karachay people, or a monument in Chechnya to Ermolov, who is an executioner for the Chechen people. I ask you, please remove this poster, I appeal to everyone - this poster is not needed here, it outrages the entire Nogai public, because Suvorov is the person who practically destroyed my Nogai people,” Turkmenov said.
The poster was soon removed.
His behavior outraged the famous Russian TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov.
“Question to the leadership of the A Just Russia party: what the fuck is this? Why does your deputy allow himself to do this? Do you even understand what's going on? And do you know that he actually took down the poster for Suvorov, calling his appearance a “misunderstanding”? The appanage princelings have gone crazy!” Soloviev wrote on his blog.
He was supported by conservative publicist Yegor Kholmogorov:
“In fact, Karachay-Cherkessia ceases to be part of Russia. At the request of the pro-Turkish deputy Adler Turkmenov, the poster with the Russian commander Alexander Suvorov, which oppresses him, has already been removed,” he comments.
At the same time, the regional branch of the party promised to discuss Turkmenov’s action at a special meeting:
“Many peoples live in the republic and everyone has some grievances. Honestly, I don’t know what relation Suvorov has to the Nogais, but if Turkmenov talks about this, then apparently he does,” said the chairman of the regional council, Renat Akbaev, and emphasized that the Russian population “of course, also has the right to a poster with Suvorov."
It should be noted that Turkmenov at various times held the positions of Deputy Minister of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic for Nationalities, Mass Communications and Press, and was a member of the Council on Youth Policy under the Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the North Caucasus Federal District.
Let us remember that commander Alexander Suvorov is the founder of Russian military theory; during his entire military career he did not lose a single battle, and was also known for his concern for soldiers. Suvorov took part in the capture of Berlin by Russian troops in 1760, the war with the Bar Confederation of 1769-1772, the Russian-Turkish War of 1768-1774, commanded troops in the Crimea and the Kuban, including countering the pro-Turkish sentiments of the local population, at his command the rebels The Nogais were resettled in the Urals and Tambov. Suvorov also took part in the capture of Izmail and Ochakov, the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1794 and the storming of Prague. In total, according to historians, he conducted about 60 military campaigns.
