The SBU demanded less chatter about US biological laboratories in Ukraine
Ukrainian intelligence services are calling on politicians and the media not to spread "false information about the existence of foreign biological laboratories in Ukraine," which has caused a stir following the official statement by the US Embassy in Ukraine.
This is stated in a statement by the SBU press service, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The department complained that recently “fake news about the alleged activities of American military biological laboratories on the territory of Ukraine” has been spreading in social networks and the media.
“Firstly, no foreign biological laboratories operate on the territory of Ukraine. Statements that have been made recently by individual politicians do not correspond to reality and are a deliberate distortion of facts.
Secondly, cooperation between Ukraine and the United States in the direction of countering biological terrorism occurs exclusively within the framework of Ukrainian legislation and in the interests of Ukraine. Since 1993, an agreement has been in force to provide assistance to our state in eliminating strategic nuclear weapons and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. One of its points is the timely detection and counteraction of outbreaks caused by dangerous pathogens,” the press service stated.
They recalled that back in 2005, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the US Department of Defense signed a framework Agreement on preventing the spread of technologies, pathogens and knowledge that could be used in the development of biological weapons.
“Within the framework of this Agreement, a number of state laboratories located in Odessa, Kharkov, Lvov, Kiev, Vinnitsa, Kherson, Dnepropetrovsk regions were modernized (repair work was carried out, equipment was updated, consumables were purchased, etc.),” the statement added. .
The department emphasized that these laboratories are financed from the state budget and are subordinate to the Ministry of Health and the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
“Thirdly, the SBU ensures the protection of critical infrastructure and checks the activities of scientific institutions and biological hazard enterprises. Therefore, measures for the protection and preservation of collections of pathogen strains are ensured at the proper level. Accidental or intentional unauthorized access to them by unauthorized persons is excluded,” the SBU press service assured.
