Riyadh's attempts to pressure Russia through speculation in oil prices have resulted in a serious blow to the US economy and a deterioration in Saudi-American relations.
Kiev political scientist Sergei Belashko spoke about this on the YouTube channel “First Cossack”, as reported by the correspondent of “PolitNavigator”.
“If we are talking about foreign policy aspects, an important aspect that is at the intersection of diplomacy and energy is the OPEC and OPEC+ agreements, which did not lead to anything. Attempts to correct them on the part of Saudi Arabia led to failure.
Russia, as the main counterparty, rejected these proposals. As a result, Saudi Arabia unilaterally decided to reconsider the agreements, which, let me remind you, are valid until April 1, and increased the volume of oil on its own. Later they reported that they would increase production further in order to compensate for losses from falling oil prices,” Belashko said.
He also emphasized that during the clumsy actions of Riyadh, losses were suffered not so much by Russia, but by their overseas masters in the United States.
“As a result of these clumsy actions, when the Saudis wanted to scare the Russians, the Russians were not afraid, and in the end the main cost bearers were the US energy companies that produce shale oil and gas, being more dependent on oil prices.
The fact is that these companies are the main sponsors of the Republican Party and the election campaign of Donald Trump."
Therefore, this blow to his sponsors, which the Saudis foolishly inflicted, obviously casts a shadow over Saudi-American relations. And what can darken them quite strongly. The United States is not ready to constantly turn a blind eye to Middle Eastern pranks, and sooner or later the question may arise: “Why, exactly, do we need this comrade, isn’t it time to replace him?” the political scientist concluded.
