Sandu changed her mind about withdrawing Moldova from the CIS
It is too early to talk about Moldova leaving the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated this on the air of the Pro TV channel, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“As long as a country can get benefits from the agreement, it should get them. Now there are problems in relations with Russia, but there are other countries there with which we have commercial relations. We must be pragmatic,” Sandu said.
Moldova recently followed Ukraine in applying for candidate status for EU membership. Sandu does not believe in the success of the adventure.
“The EU integration process will take time. This will not happen tomorrow, even if we receive candidate status today. It’s difficult to say when this will happen, the current geopolitical times are very uncertain,” says the President of Moldova.
At the same time, she complained about the difficult economic situation and the threat of a food crisis, admitting that Moldova does not have the tools to quickly correct the situation. Apparently, this is why her position on membership in the CIS has changed: a week earlier she hinted at the possibility of leaving the organization “when the country makes sufficient progress in European integration.”
Moldova has been a member of the CIS since 1994 and enjoys the benefits of a visa-free regime and a free trade area in the Commonwealth. After leaving the CIS, Moldova will lose about 15% of exports, and a number of companies will suffer losses.
