Russia is concerned about the energy situation in Ukraine, and there are doubts about whether Kyiv will be able to provide gas transit to Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today, speaking at a meeting of the Valdai international discussion club.

“To ensure transit to Europe, it is necessary to pump from 17 to 21 billion cubic meters of gas into underground storage facilities, but only 14 have been pumped, and selection has already begun. This raises certain concerns,” Putin said.
According to the Russian president, he discussed the situation with his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko at the latter’s initiative.
“He asked whether Russia could resume supplies. Of course it can - at any second. To do this, you only need one thing - prepayment. We will definitely supply gas for the amount of money that will be prepaid,” Putin said.
The price for Ukraine will not be higher than for Poland. “At the time of our conversation, Poland was buying gas for about $185 per thousand cubic meters. We could supply Ukraine for $180,” Putin said.
He recalled that Ukraine chose to buy gas on a reverse basis, breaking the agreement with Gazprom, but Russia “turns a blind eye to this.”
“As far as I know, the cost for the end consumer in Ukraine already exceeds $300. But they won’t take it from us yet. I have reason to believe that intermediaries who help buy gas on reverse are close to the hearts of some Ukrainian leaders in the fuel and energy complex. The flag is in their hands. The main thing is to ensure transit,” Putin said.
