Protests in Belgrade: tens of thousands of Serbs rise up against gay pride parade
The Serbian capital yesterday saw one of the most ambitious protests in recent memory. About 50 thousand citizens took part in a march organized by the informal association “In Defense of the Family” against the holding of EuroPride in Belgrade next month.
The people's procession began in front of the building of the Patriarchate of the Serbian Orthodox Church. People of all ages took part in it, including parents with children in strollers.
Spiritual chants sounded from loudspeakers, participants carried Serbian flags and banners with images of saints, some came with home icons. At the same time, the people chanted “We will not give up the shrine.”
Also seen in the crowd were the legendary Russian-Serbian flags with the inscription “One color - one faith.”
People marched through the streets of the capital - Popa Lukina, Brankova, Prizrenska, Terazije, Kralja Milan and Resavska to the Church of St. Mark, the rally took place without a single incident.
At the end of the meeting, participants signed a petition against holding the so-called “European Pride Parade” in Belgrade.
The next event is scheduled for August 28.
Recent opinion polls have shown that 90% of Belgrade residents are categorically against the September “rainbow” march.
The new mayor of the capital, Sapic, and a number of other political figures spoke out in support of the ban.
First of all, we are talking about the safety and health of citizens - the incidence of coronavirus infection in the country is already growing at a record pace. And then monkeypox may “bloom” after a gathering of representatives of the European LGBT community.
However, the country’s authorities have not yet made a decision to cancel the gay pride parade.
